A Glimpse of Spring?
As I walked down to my local Caffelito to power myself up before writing this week’s newsletter, I spotted a cloudless blue sky as the sun was setting. 🌞🌞
It’s been a long winter with some of the highest levels of pollution in the world.
Tashkent is not exactly the best place to be in winter but we’ve almost made it to spring!

What Caught Our Eyes this Week…
Big news for travellers! ✈️ Wizz Air is looking to expand its routes from Uzbekistan to Europe, with talks of a direct Tashkent-Budapest flight by year’s end. More flights to Abu Dhabi and new routes to Namangan and Urgench are also on the table—great news for affordable travel options!
A military general has been elected as the President of the Uzbekistan Football Association. General-Colonel Bakhodir Kurbanov, head of the State Security Service, will now take charge of the nation’s football scene—an unusual pick for the beautiful game! Let’s see if his leadership brings a more disciplined approach to the pitch. ⚽👮♂️
Good news for Tashkent’s green spaces! The Senate has banned the privatisation of parks, alleys, and squares, preventing future construction in these areas. Meanwhile, officials have denied recent rumors of high-rise developments in Anhor park—so it looks like your favorite walking spots are safe….for now! 🌿
Restaurant of the Week: Syrovarnya
Tashkent’s cheesiest restaurant?

Riccotta Salad
Syrovarnya, or ‘cheese factory’ in English, is one of the fancier restaurants in Tashkent’s centre. As you might have guessed, it’s the menu is pretty heavy on the cheese!
They make their own mozzarella, burrata, stracciatella, and more, which feature in many of the meals from wood-fired pizzas to ricotta pancakes. The borscht is a standout for non-cheese lovers, and there are plenty of other options too.
It’s priced quite a bit higher than the average Tashkent restaurant, but the quality and service make it worth every penne.
If you’re a cheese fan, this place is a must—it's truly brie-lliant, and you can even take some home from the cheese counter.

In the Spotlight: Tashkent’s Pumpkin Museum
Pumpkins you say?? A museum???
Most Uzbeks have never heard of it either.
The Pumpkin Museum in Tashkent is as quirky as it sounds! This family-run spot is packed with over 1,000 decorated pumpkins, plus hands-on workshops and puppet shows.
You’ll learn about pumpkin growing, see some incredible designs, and maybe even take one home. A fun, unexpected little gem!
